Godric's Hollow 31st October, 1981
The autumn wind rattled the branches outside the Lupin cottage. Inside, the fire was low, casting a gentle orange warmth across the small sitting room where Remus Lupin rocked his infant daughter in his arms.
You ,Y/N Lupin, only a year old, with your soft tuft of hair shifting from brown to a faint dusty pink in your sleep. A baby Metamorphmagus, though you had no control yet.
Your mother, Evelyn Lupin, stood in the doorway tying her scarf. A kind, beautiful woman, brilliant, brave, and warm in all the ways the world needed.
Evelyn said softly "Remus... it's just one evening. James and Lily need company. They said it's been quiet there all day." Remus didn't respond at first. He only studied your small figure, your hand curled in his robe, your cheek pressed into his chest.A full moon was approaching. His joints ached more than usual. Worry clung to him. But the world has been full of worry lately. "But I don't like the timing", said Remus quietly. "We haven't visited in months. And James says Harry's started walking. Imagine that,"Evelyn said.
Remus looked up sharply at her.Her smile wavered."Please Just one calm evening. We could use that,"she showed him her puppy eyes. And now he finally sighed, brushing his thumb over your hair as it flickered back to brown."If anything happens..." "I'll protect her. You know I will."Evelyn interrupted before Remus could say anything further
Remus gently handed you over, though it clearly pained him. "Stay safe, my love. Both of you."
Evelyn kissed him warm, lingering, full of meaning, before wrapping you securely in a soft knitted blanket. "Let's go see the Potters, sweetheart", she whispered to you.And with a last look at Remus, she stepped outside into the chilly October evening.Remus stood in the doorway long after she had disapparated, staring at the empty space she had left behind.
At Potter's House :
Evelyn arrived at the little house in Godric's Hollow, its windows glowing warmly. The door swung open before she could knock. James Potter grinned widely, messy hair sticking up in every direction, baby Harry perched on his hip."Evelyn! And little Y/N! Merlin, she's grown!"James said.Your hair strands changed colours again from brown to honeygold making James laugh."She's already better at transforming than I ever was."He laughed heartedly.
Lily appeared behind him, auburn hair tied back, eyes bright but tired."Come in, Eve. You must be freezing", she said softly.
Inside, the house smelled like cinnamon and baby powder. Pictures moved across the walls , Harry waving, Lily chasing him, James falling off a broom. Evelyn placed you next to Harry on the play mat.The two babies blinked at each other...then Harry immediately offered you his favourite stuffed toy.
"Oh, that's friendship right there", Lily said smiling widely."Or love at first sight."followed by James. Lily smacked his arm. "They're babies, James." "Yes lily, but powerful" Evelyn shook her head, amused. But beneath the laughter, a heaviness lingered. She sat near the fire, warming her hands.
"How are you two holding up? Really", Evelyn asked. Lily and James exchanged a look. "We're safe here. The Fidelius Charm—"Lily said but was interrupted by James "Peter is doing brilliantly. No one suspects a thing."
Evelyn nodded but something flickered in her chest. A small, uneasy spark. Both babies were asleep on a quilt Lily had spread out near the fire. You were curled close to Harry, tiny fingers tangled in his sweater. Lily watched the two of you, her smile wistful.
"They look like siblings", Lily said smiling. "They were meant to grow up together." James frowned, sobering. "And they will. When this war ends, "James said. Lily reached for her wand, performing a small charm to dim the lights. "Remus wanted to come, but the full moon's close." Lily nodded gently. She understood. "He's one of the bravest men I know." said James. Evelyn's throat tightened. She didn't disagree.
Suddenly—
Tap-tap.
A faint noise at the window. Lily stiffened."Probably just the wind." But Evelyn felt it. the same unease that had been growing for months. Something prickled along her spine. She stood, peering out the window.
Nothing, just the moon.
"We should check the wards." Evelyn whispered
But before James could a sound split the night.
CRACK.
A violent ripple of magic tore through the street. The air grew colder. Heavier. Wrong.
Lily's eyes widened."He found us."said lily
Outside the house, a cloaked figure stood under the moonlight.
Peter Pettigrew.
His small, trembling hands were clenched around his wand. Tears stained his cheeks.
"I'm sorry... I'm so sorry... I didn't have a choice..."peter whimperedAnd behind him
A tall, skeletal figure glided forward.
Eyes red.
Breath like death.
Lord Voldemort.
James shouted. "Take the babies and Lily go upstairs!". "James, no—!"Evelyn refused, "I'll hold him off. GO!" he said firmly. Lily grabbed Harry and Evelyn grabbed you. Both mothers raced upstairs, hearts pounding.
Behind them
the front door exploded.
Lily screamed whereas Evelyn clutched you to her chest as dust filled the air. Voldemort's voice slithered through the house.
"James Potter. Stand aside."Voldemort said but James didn't answer.
A blast shook the walls. Glass shattered.
Evelyn stumbled but didn't fall.
She reached the nursery, slamming the door shut.
Lily was trembling,"Eve, take Y/N and apparate. Now."
"I can't leave you Lily.."
"GO! He won't stop until-"said lilly
Another explosion downstairs. Evelyn held you tighter, tears blurring her vision.Lily kissed your forehead, voice shaking."Be brave, little one."
Evelyn took two steps back. But before she could turn a green flash lit the stairs.
James. Gone.
Lily choked on a sob. And now Voldemort rose through the smoke, gliding into the nursery doorway.Lily placed Harry in his crib, blocking Voldemort's path with her body. "Not Harry! Please ,not Harry!"She pleadedEvelyn saw it saw the inevitability of it & her hand shook.
She should apparate. She should run. She should save you.
But she couldn't leave Lily.
"Leave the Potter's take me instead"Evelyn said strongly.Voldemort barely glanced at her. "Foolish woman."he glared at her
Lily did not move.Evelyn, in that split second, made her choice. She placed you in a corner behind a protective charm a shield of pure maternal love and stepped beside Lily.
Harry began to cry and Y/N sensing everything, began to cry too.
"Avada Kedavra"
Green light
A scream
Then silence
Lily Collapsed first,Evelyn second.
Two mothers. Two shields. Two sacrifices.A double wall of love. And when Voldemort turned his wand to the babies casting the spell, something ancient and unstoppable struck back.Your mother's love.Lily's love. The protection intertwined.
A blast of unimaginable force tore through the house.
Outside, every window shattered. The roof split open.
Light white, gold, pure erupted into the night sky. When the dust settled Voldemort's body was gone.Only a charred imprint on the floor remained.
Baby Harry cried in the crib. You are beside him.The two children who survived death.
Minutes later :
BANG.
Sirius Black apparated outside the ruined house, heart pounding.
"JAMES! LILY!", he shouted. He climbed over the rubble, slipping on broken bricks, his breath choking him. He froze on seeing the sight. His best friend, his best friend's wife Lily, and his other best friend's wife Evelyn. Gone. Sirius fell to his knees -hands shaking violently.
A tiny cry made him lift his head. Sirius slowly approached the crib where Harry sat, tears on his cheeks. Then he saw you wrapped in your blanket, a few hair strands flickering softly as you sobbed.Sirius pressed a hand over his mouth.
Suddenly footsteps were heard.Hagrid. "Dumbledore sent me Sirius"His voice cracked.Hagrid saw you both and collapsed to one knee. "Poor little things..."he whispered.Sirius lifted Harry gently.Sirius then lifted you, cradling you close."I'm their godfather. I'll take them both", he said. Before he could finish, Hagrid shook his head. "Dumbledore's orders. The children are ter go ter their families".Sirius froze."Remus... Remus will take Y/n. He loves her. He will. "Hagrid placed a huge, gentle hand on Sirius's shoulder. "Remus is ummm not well. Full moon's close. He ain't safe ter take care of a babe alone. Dumbledore made arrangements'.Sirius's eyes filled with rage.
But Hagrid was firm."Dumbledore said to bring the babies ter him. Now." Sirius's face crumpled. He kissed Harry's forehead, then yours."I'll find you both I promise."He handed you and Harry to Hagrid, voice breaking completely.
Sirius ran out of the house, fury burning through him.Hagrid watched him go.Then he looked down at the two small orphans in his massive arms."Poor lil' loves." he whispered painfully.
Dumbledore's Choice :
Later that night, under the silver wash of the moon, Dumbledore waited near Privet Drive. He saw Hagrid approaching, carrying Harry... and you. Dumbledore's eyes tired, wise, unbearably sad which softened at the sight of the two children. "So small. So very small, he said. McGonagall stood rigid beside him. "Are you certain Albus? Keeping them together-" "Would be dangerous." McGonagall was interrupted by Albus.
He gazed at Harry. "Voldemort's followers will seek the Boy Who Lived." Then he looked at you, as you slept. "And they may seek her too. 2 children saved by sacrificial magic... The Dark Lord may fear her as well." McGonagall swallowed hard. "Albus, Harry has relatives, but what about her -the Lupin girl... where will she go? Should we send her to Remus back, but err you know the Full moon's soon, will it be safe?" Dumbledore exhaled slowly. "She will go to a Muggle family who will love her. A family who has longed for a girl child will keep her safe."He placed you gently into a basket with a soft purple blanket .A letter on top. Dumbledore touched your cheek tenderly. "Sleep well, little Y/N Lupin. The world will be kinder to you than it was to your parents. That is my deepest hope." McGonagall wiped her eyes.
And for harry Dumbledore placed him on the Dursleys'(his aunt & uncle) doorstep." They are the only family he has left now.". ""You don't mean you can't - mean the people who lives here?" cried Professor McGonagall " Dumbledore , you can't do this. I've been watching them all day. You couldn't find 2 people who are less like us and they are the worst sort of muggles I've ever seen." Dumbledore sighed, "they will be able to explain him very well when he grows up. He must grow strong. And he must grow humble." McGonagall looked horrified ,"He will be famous, a Legend, every child in our world would know his name".
Far away, in another quiet neighbourhood, you were left on the Harringtons' doorstep.
Two children. Two destinies. Two chosen by fate.
Separated.
Yet tied forever by a night that destroyed everything...
...and bound your souls together long before you knew each other's names
